Cancelled: A Very Poppy Purim

Cancelled: A Very Poppy Purim

Saturday, March 14, 2020 @ 8:30PMSat, Mar 14, 2020 @ 8:30PM

RUBA Ballroom-Theater

Oops, we did it again: created a brand new show with a brand new theme voted on by you! This year, we'll be partying like it's 1999 BCE at A Very Poppy Purim. You are in store for a night of six-pointed star power, featuring pop legends from every generation including Queen V (AKA Veyashti), the King Achashverosh of Pop, Lady Estha, Morty Mars, and the Asshole Formerly Known as Prime Minister.

Philly - verypoppypurim.eventbrite.com Thursday, March 5th Friday, March 6th Saturday, March 14th

NYC - Saturday, March 7th.

Purim is a Jewish holiday. But A Very Awesome Purim is an interactive musical and after-party about a drunken king, an evil prime minister, and a brave queen who saves the entire Jewish population. The production strikes a careful balance of off-color humor, on-key parodies, and surprisingly poignant lessons about cultural acceptance. With your help, we choose a theme—this year, thanks to more than 200 of you who voted, we're excited to bring you A Very Poppy Purim.

This is what you can expect from the night:

An interactive musical featuring parodies of your favorite Pop songs.

Drinking! In Purim tradition, you're supposed to drink until you can't tell the difference between the good guy and the bad guy in the story. (It's not difficult.)

A costume party. Dress to the theme, or any costume will do. There may even be a reward for the best-dressed...

A boisterous sing-a-long. A boisterous dance-along: With songs like "Like a Persian" and "Thrill me Queen" and more audience participation than ever before, this is not a year to miss.

The greatest party of the year. We might be biased. Guess you'll have to find out.

A VERY POPPY PURIM

Philadelphia Thursday, March 5th, 2020 at 8 p.m. Friday, March 6th, 2020 at 8:30 p.m Saturday, March 14th, 2020 at 8:30 p.m- Cancelled

Marquis Hill’s Love Tape

Marquis Hill’s Love Tape

Saturday, February 15, 2020 @ 8:00PMSat, Feb 15, 2020 @ 8:00PM

RUBA Ballroom-Theater

Please join us for a scintillating performance by inventive trumpeter Marquis Hill and his soulful new project Love Tape.

From his beginnings as one of Chicago’s most thrilling young trumpeters to his current status as an internationally renowned musician, composer, and bandleader, Marquis Hill has worked tirelessly to break down the barriers that divide musical genres. Contemporary and classic jazz, hip-hop, R&B, Chicago house, neo-soul—to Hill, they’re all essential elements of the profound African-American creative heritage he’s a part of. “It all comes from the same tree,” says the 2014 Thelonious Monk Competition winner. “They simply blossomed from different branches.”

Hill’s eighth studio album, Love Tape, is a sonic masterpiece that explores the depths of self-love. Hailing it as one of the year’s 10 Best Jazz Albums in the New York Times, Giovanni Russonello described the album as “caught between album and mixtape, between casual one-off and conceptual ambition, between jazz and hip-hop and beat music.”

For Love Tape, Hill assembled a collection of interviews of women sharing their perspective on the subject of self-love, resulting in further confirmation of a familiar adage: “Before you can love someone else, you must first love yourself.“ Its sonic nuances reveal Hill’s ever-growing comfort with his own musical identity. The album weaves spoken-word selections by such artists as Eartha Kitt, Phylicia Rashad, and Abbey Lincoln into a rich genre-blurring tapestry exploring the territory between jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and more.

10 years ago, at Lloyd Hall, a running group formed in an effort to bring more local runners to the Philadelphia Marathon and help beginning and moderate runners train for both the marathon and the Broad Street Run.

Over the last decade, we have seen hundreds of runners finish their first race, set and break new Personal Records, and achieve what they previously thought was impossible.

To celebrate a decade of running, we are cordially inviting you to our 10 year Anniversary Soiree! Join Team Philly runners, both past, present, and (maybe even) future, on January 11th for an evening of food, fun, and dancing. And make sure to stop by the photo booth to memorialize the night!

Kurt Ronsenwinkel’s Bandit65

Kurt Ronsenwinkel’s Bandit65

Monday, January 6, 2020 @ 8:00PMMon, Jan 6, 2020 @ 8:00PM

RUBA Ballroom-Theater

Please join us for a performance by the electrifying trio Bandit65, featuring the otherworldly guitar tandem of Kurt Ronsenwinkel and Tim Motzer.

Bandit65 is a mesmerizing post-jazz sonic trio of breathtaking virtuosity, great power, boundless breadth, and astounding beauty. Kurt Rosenwinkel, Tim Motzer, and Gintas Janusonis explore the intersection of guitars, rhythms, electronics, soundscapes, experimentalism, psych-rock, free improvisation, and telepathic interplay. The trio explores a wide open canvas, searching and pushing the envelope live and discovering captivating mind-blowing multidimensional landscapes of sound in their improvisations.

Beside being two of the most inventive and adventurous guitar wizards in modern music, Rosenwinkel and Motzer both boast deep Philadelphia roots – Rosenwinkel a native who was a member of the miraculous CAPA class that also included Christian McBride, Joey DeFrancesco and members of The Roots; while Motzer has long called the city home, using it as a base for his expansive sonic explorations and all-encompassing collaborations.

“The closely worked textures and supple rhythms that infused this intriguing gig were conjured on the fly from two guitars, a drum kit and a battery of pedals and effects,” described The London Financial Times about a 2018 gig. “Each piece opened with a wash of electronica and evolved into a body-shaking groove, cued by a just-invented riff or a repeated beat. But though even the core of this multi-layered gig was left to chance, it had the clean lines and sense of order of pre-composed music.”

Rosenwinkel needs no introduction in jazz circles: one of the most influential musicians of his generation, he is a defining master, trailblazer, and preeminent international jazz guitarist-composer with a career spanning almost twenty-five years. With over 70 albums of credits, Motzer continues to traverse manifold territories in music and has developed a distinct textural guitar voice utilizing looping, bowing, electronics, and prepared techniques. Janusonis is a NYC-based, Grammy-nominated, internationally-acclaimed drummer, composer, and producer who has worked with a diverse range of world class artists, groups, and producers during a 20-plus year career, including Angelique Kidjo, Branford Marsalis, Lee Scratch Perry, RZA, Wu-Tang Clan, Bill Laswell, David Murray, Bilal and many more.
